Bali and Beyond, a Los Angeles-based performing company inspired by the cultures of Indonesia, led by music director Cliff DeArment and dalang (shadow artist) Maria Bodmann, celebrates two of the most ancient performing arts traditions in the world: presenting the shimmering polyrhythms of gamelan music, performed on traditional bronze bar instruments, drums, flutes, and gongs, and the entrancing art of wayang kulit (shadow puppet theatre).

A variety of styles of gamelan will be introduced, followed by a dance of the Tree of Life and a parade of flickering characters, shadows cast by the figures manipulated by Maria Bodmann, the dalang (shadow artist) whose work has been called “graceful, bewitching, irresistible” by the Los Angeles Times. You will then be invited to peer behind the scenes to see how the magic is achieved, followed by a shadow performance complete with traditional singing, music, narration and action, unfolding like a shared communal dream.

The peformers also include Mike Pievac, Dave Shaffer, Barry Newton and Ryan McCarty.

About the World Festival of Sacred Music-Los Angeles: Since its inception in 1999 following a call from His Holiness the Dalai Lama, the Festival has become a global music destination marked by artistic accomplishment and the rich diversity of sacred heritages in our city.

More than 1,000 artists perform in 41 sacred events of music and movement across Los Angeles - crossing neighborhoods, cultural, religious and ideological boundaries in the spirit of peace. For sixteen days and nights, from September 13-28, 2008 WFSM-LA fills LA’s historic landmark theaters, churches, temples and outdoor spaces with 41 performances featuring renowned local and international artists.

Drawing upon indigenous,classical, popular and contemporary expressions of sacred music, the festival is
intentionally set out to introduce people to one another in new ways.

As we celebrate the beauty of music from around the world, we are given an invitation to reflect on the values expressed in these traditions and ur essential longing for meaning and connection with others.

Through the diversity of the festival, we come together to appreciate and value the integrity of the music and cultures from which they are drawn. The music manifests continuity - of time from past to present, of wisdom and faith, of community, and of our highest aspirations. As we bear witness to the remarkable artists we remember that their music is not simply for our personal entertainment or gratification.

The Festival exemplifies their commitment to exchanging musical, spriritual and cultural traditions - on shared programs and by visiting each other’s neighborhoods - and invites a new exploration of our city and its many communities.

31 August, Taliwang-West Sumbawa: Mustofa Jeksen double-barreled his way into his fourth round heat win with an impressive display of tube riding on arguably the biggest and meanest wave of the day in the final hour of action at the Rip Curl Scar Reef Pro today, chalking up a perfect 10 point ride, the second of the competition thus far.

The first 10 point wave went to Dede Suryana earlier in the day for his triple barrel, which was quite a feat in the tricky conditions present at Scar Reef
today, requiring him to backdoor the last two of his trips through the green room The expected swell was a bit late in arriving, so the action in the water didn’t get started until noon with Round 3 in 3-4 foot surf. The swell built throughout the afternoon, and with the exception of a couple of heats presented the competitors with some of the best barrel opportunities of the event thus far reaching the 8 foot mark at the its peak.
